Sewing Stories

Coordinated Christmas

I want to sew outfits for everyone. All the time. Its a bit of a problem. I have to convince myself it is not entirely necessary (nor financially wise) to make every extended family member their own pajama pants, bishop dress, and matching bonnet. However; around Christmastime my self control dwindles. Christmas is an exception. Christmas is pretty. People should coordinate….making sure to conform to the image in my head….right? This year I have kept my sewing to one side of the family. I have even narrowed it down to children! Here’s what I came up with.

I have a petite nine-year-old niece who delighted in choosing her own dress pattern. She opted for the Children’s Corner Lilah. Her brother was a bit trickier, as he’s seven and wears a size eight in tops and bottoms. I considered the Children’s Corner Robert pattern (one of my favorites-the instructions are AMAZING) but realized it only goes up to a size six. So…what to do?

Y’all. I cheated. I bought the sweater from Land’s End. I considered embroidering it, then realized that it was insanely cheap to have them embroider it and I called it a day. I used Ebates to get 10% cash back and a coupon code that Land’s End was advertising and I bought him a personalized sweater for far less than any outfit that I made for him. C’est La Vie.

Onto my little one; I’ve been on a bit of a Children’s Corner Maggie Kick of late. If you can get your hands on this vintage pattern DO IT. Even if you don’t smock. Even if you don’t sew but think you may one day. Even if it cost forty dollars. Just do it! It is so sweet, requires very little smocking, can be worn for play or dress. It is the perfect dress. So; I decided to make Maria a Maggie that coordinated with her cousins ensembles. Check out my fabric choices and combinations below!

I purchased this plaid and navy Imperial Broadcloth to complete these outfits. I also used this trim for the Maggie. Check my instagram to see pictures of the kiddo’s in their coordinating apparel at Christmas!
