Creative Needle Easy Sunsuit-Overalls

Given my obsession with babies in bubbles, it should come as little surprise that I’m also a sucker for overalls. They’re just the cutest, most classic, most perfect little summer staple. Once again, Little English popped into my inbox with one of the sweetest outfits I’ve seen…since the last time they did that.

After seeing this cutie I knew it had to be mine. I scoured the internet for a similar pattern. I texted my friend, Margy to get her input on what patterns to mash up, what fabric to use, etc. I’m not going to lie, this one stumped us for a bit.

Then one day, while pursuing Farmhouse Fabrics patterns for fun (doesn’t everyone do that?) I came across this.

At first glance, It took me a second to realize I could make it work…but y’all….I can make it work! Then I ran across this Fabric Finders Twill and realized the weight would be perfect for this semi lined pattern.

So; I decided to do this one in stages. Round one would involve my sewing the pattern completely as written. I’ve sewn for several years now, and I know that the easiest way to mess up a pattern is to do just that…mess with it too much…at least before you know it well. Enter, Robby the guinea pig. 🙂

Once I’ve done a pattern I usually start to feel a bit more confident, this one was no exception. The side closures on this pattern have some interesting instructions….it took me several attempts at them to get them right. So when I went to do round two I felt a bit better.

For Maria’s, I started to modify the pattern, not a ton but just enough to move one step closer to my overall dream. I added side pockets. I did this using Children’s Corner Robert’s Pockets as a guide. The pattern piece cannot be used (this pocket has to be at a different angle based on the arm opening) but having the instructions and the basic pattern pieces was extremely helpful.

So; with this modification done I am starting on my next round of overalls. This time I’ll be using different colors of twill (blue and pink) adding a pocket to Maria’s and switching the strap button to the front…I’m also thinking about adding a ruffle to the pockets…which shall see. I’m not a huge fan of ironing ruffles so it may or may not happen.

This pattern only goes down to a size two. Robby is definitely not a size two. I’ll be adjusting the length on his for my second round, but due to the nature of overalls, the pattern worked just fine for him.

Also, random aside, we’ve recently switched from the lace up keds to these t-strap velcro keds for Maria and are loving them. She can put them on and take them off herself…which she loves. I switched these for Robby so he can match…of course 🙂

Hope you enjoyed this short and sweet post, I’ll keep you updated on round two!

Abbey, I was really interested to see what you said about this pattern. I have it and made it once. I had trouble figuring the side closure also and was hoping that you would show how you figured it out! Yours turned out precious! I may have to take it out and try again. I saw Cindy Foose, who created the pattern, at saga convention and told her that I had trouble with the side closure. She told me to call her if I made it again and had a problem. Thanks for the great review.
