Boy Sewing

Snips, Snails, and Puppy Dog Tails. What Classic Sewing for Boys is Made Of!

I began sewing baby clothes when I was pregnant with my first child, Maria. I learned how to sew as she grew. As I accumulated more knowledge and quite a few more patterns, I began to almost exclusively sew her wardrobe. When I found out I was pregnant again, I couldn’t wait to sew more, especially when I found out it was a boy. In my head, this boy would wear handmade bubbles and Jon Jons for all of time. I have since had another boy and have successfully kept them in classic, hand made clothing (a lot of the time anyway). Often, people find that sewing for boys can get a little boring, saying that there aren’t many pattern options for them. I’m here to tell you that you have options, sewing for boys can be varied, challenging and fun.

This post is for you, boy mama! You can sew and smock fun garments too! Below you will find a “list” of tons of boy pattern options. They should all be linked upon their caption.

There are several big(ish) pattern brands to consider when sewing (classic clothing) for boys: Creations by Michie and Children’s Corner Patterns. Here are my favorites from these two:

If you exhaust these two sources, there are some other really fun options. Kathy Dykstra has THE most well fitting newborn/preemie patterns I’ve ever sewn for my boys.

Primrose Lane has this stunning Michaela, its easily sourced and absolute smocked boy perfection.

Creative Needle (no longer in print but not too hard to find) has some glorious patterns: the Alan’s Bubble, Easy Sunsuit.

And then you can even get adventurous and use a French boy’s pattern!

Another really fun pattern for boys is my sunsuit!

Sewing for boys doesn’t have to be boring, you can use tons of colors, smocking plates, and fun embroidery on their clothes (trains, boats, planes, animals, construction vehicles, etc.)

This is an out of print pattern from Children’s Corner. It is called the Tracey. The frog can be found here.
One of my all time favorite boy patterns with the sweetest embroidery.

Hopefully, this post gives you some good boy pattern ideas, new fabric choice ideas or introduces you to a pattern designer you haven’t seen before! Drop a comment if I missed one of your favorite boy patterns! Other’s would love to read them 🙂

I love these! I too am a boy mama…but my boy is now 25 years old. I loved dressing him as a boy and not as a little man. LOL…I was an older mom and he is my only child. When we learned that I was pregnant with a boy, I told my husband that he was mine to dress until he objected! I also did picture smocked inserts in sweatshirts when he was too big for johnjohns. Thank you for sharing!

I absolutely love Creations by Michie #138 Children’s Jumpsuit. I made it out of featherwale corduroy with machine embroidery and it turned out sooo cute!
