What I listen to While Sewing…

Confession: I am a podcast junkie. I listen almost non-stop. When I’m sewing I always have a podcast playing on my phone. Awhile back, I mentioned a couple of my favorites in my stories and was overwhelmed by how many people responded with their favorites…apparently I’m not alone in my sewing while podcasting obsession. I thought I’d compile a list of my favorites here….mainly so you will respond with yours and give me new ones to listen to!

  1. The 27 Club: this is a new podcast about the life of music artists who died at the age of twenty-seven. Its incredibly well written and produced. Jimmy Hendrix is the topic of the first season.
  2. Disgraceland: this podcast is written and narrated by the same person as the 27 club. Each episode focuses on a different music artist and the (often) interesting choices they made.
  3. Awesome Etiquette : One to listen to with your kiddos. Totally appropriate and written /narrated by Lizzie and Daniel Post Senning of the Emily Post Institute. They take questions on how to behave in an honest, respectful manner toward others.
  4. Brought To You By: this is one of my newer podcasts (its been around for awhile though). It is about the story of different name brand products. I learned a ton about the Oneida brand on this podcast recently-it was super interesting. Also appropriate for kiddos.
  5. Reasonable Doubt: This is a weekly podcast by a right-leaning comedian (Adam Corolla) and left-leaning lawyer (Mark Geragos). They basically just talk about current events and current trials. Interesting but not appropriate for younger ears.
  6. Every Little Thing: Usually appropriate for kiddos. The host is a super nerd who likes to take deep dives into questions her listeners write in. One of my favorites is about flamingos and how amazingly adaptable and resilient they are.
  7. Freakonomics: The podcast that got me into podcasts. If you’ve ever read the book Freakonimcs, the podcast is an extension of it. The host, Stephen Dubner is a professor at Chicago University and he delves into the economics of EVERYTHING. Seriously my number one recommendation.
  8. I Spy: This is a newer one for me too-it is a bunch of different stories told by previous secret agents.
  9. We Crashed: This is the story of WeWork. A multi-million dollar company that went belly up.
  10. We Hold These Truths: This is also a newer one for me. It is by Dan Crenshaw, the former Navy Seal and current United States congressman from Texas.
  11. The Shrink Next-door: a seriously crazy, true story about a mind-controlling psychiatrist in New York.
  12. Legal Wars: this podcast has quite a few seasons. Each season focuses on a trial or series of trials that dramatically changed American law.
  13. Disorganized Crime: the crazy story of a girl who grew up with major drug dealing parents.
  14. American Jihadi: the story of a reporter who had direct contact with a former American citizen who was wanted by the FBI as a terrorist.
  15. Reply All: this is such a fun podcast. It is two people who are pretty tech savvy who report on various tech issues. For example, there’s an entire episode dedicated to figuring out how Instagram and Facebook “hear” you on your phone.
  16. Criminal: the host of this podcast has the best voice. She elaborates on various crimes that have been committed. She often interviews the perpetrators.

So I’m not going to lie, I could probably do an entire additional post with sixteen more podcasts I love. I sew for about an hour and a half a day, so I typically go through at least two podcasts. These are some of my all time favorites, in no particular order. If I’m around my kids, I listen to Freakonomics, Every Little Thing, or Awesome Etiquette. The others I save for my alone time.

If you’re new to podcasts, start with Freakonomics. If you’re a podcast lover, I hope I’ve provided you all with some new ones…please send me your recs…I clearly have a problem.
