Baby Gift Ideas

I have recently received or given some awesome handmade or classic baby gifts during this pregnancy and thought I’d share some with you. It dawned on me that baby gifts are something you often need but can be tricky, based on your familiarity with the recipient. So; I rounded up some of my faves for you! I tried to vary them based on whom the recipient is.

Smocked Jamie: for the special person you know will love something smocked. I recently made this bubble for a first-time mama of a little girl. Its a risky one because not everyone loves smocked garments (or ironing!) It takes some serious time investment, so if you’re not sure that the recipient will love it, don’t go there. If you’re interested in making your first Jamie, I’d recommend Sarah Classic Sewing’s Sew Along on Youtube. Check it out here!

For this Jamie I used a made up smocking plate and this lawn fabric.

Monogrammed/Embroidered burp cloths: the BEST/SAFEST/MOST USED gift ever. I’m not sure about you but when I have a newborn I have at least three burp cloths in every location I may be. I received these adorable burp cloths recently and LOVE how they’re personalized and how the bottom is finished off with seersucker. When making these, use the 6 ply, pre-fold cloth diapers…they’re significantly more absorbent than the 3 ply option. I also think they’re easier to embroider. Also, how cute is this packaging? So simple and well curated.

Bow Swaddle-want to sew but aren’t sure the recipient is team smocked? This is my first time making a bow swaddle-it was SO SIMPLE and provides a fantastic blank canvas to personalize. You could monogram it, use special fabrics, choose to use a satin ribbon for the bow, etc. For this one I chose a gingham double gauze from Farmhouse Fabrics and a poly/cotton dotted fabric. I chose this fabric because my little man will be born in a hot month, this would be perfect in knit (like this one) for a baby born in a cooler month.

I used a pattern called “The Satin Bow Swaddle” that I purchased from Southern Stitches a couple of years ago. I’m not seeing her pattern on her website but have emailed her to see if I can get ya’ll a link.

These are so practical and adorable…so far my littles do not exist outside of a swaddle for the first 1-2 months of their lives. Not in the mood to sew? You can buy one here.

I styled this swaddle with a rattle…another perfect gift that new mamas will not buy for themselves but would love to have as a keepsake for their littles. Here is one at a lower price point!

Last but not least, Blanks boutique gown: these are so practical for every night wear. This would also be perfect for the new mama who doesn’t go for smocking/embroidery/etc. I know that’s basically blasphemy but I think they do exist. If the little baby has siblings, there are matching pajamas that you could give to them so they’re not left out! And if mama does like embroidery-embroider away! They’re literally a blank canvas!

Hope this gives you some new ideas for baby gifts….also when at a complete loss….I’ve never met a mom who doesn’t want diapers!

Hi just wanted to let you know…(like you don’t have enough on your hands already 😊!). I followed the link in the bishop construction tutorial (August 2019) for wash away tape. The link does take you to a quilting basting tape but it isn’t wash away and the shipping is quite high. Just thought id let you know. Thanks for the tutorials though. They are quite helpful.
